Windows Deployment Services vs Symantec Ghost for Corporate Environment
What is Windows Deployment Services?
The Windows Deployment Services is the updated and redesigned version of Remote Installation Services (RIS). Windows Deployment Services enables you to deploy Windows operating systems. You can use it to set up new computers by using a network-based installation. This means that you do not have to install each operating system directly from a CD or DVD.
What is Symantec Ghost?
Imaging, deployment, and management of Windows and Linux systems in a corporate environment.
So whats the benefits of using it? Well lets get started
They both do the same thing, but the only difference is cost.
Since I'm a system administrator I had the luxury of using both.
I started out using Symantec Ghost for around 7 years. Recently Deployed Windows Deployment Services.
I implemented WDS on virtual server and it works, I deployed Windows XP images for my firm. Deployment take 15min which is great.
Symantec Ghost one bad thing is you must purchase licenses equal to the workstation you own in the company. For example, If you company had 50 workstations you will have to buy 50 licenses.
Windows Deployment Services is free once you paid for your Volume License for purchasing the server product with Microsoft.
So why am I talking about this, well in todays IT Environment, Companies want more for less.
Therefore if your a IT person who wants to save money for the firm you can go with WDS.
So if you want to Deploy Windows Deployment Services I would recommend it.
